greet at Media Play in Michigan. (I live in Michigan.) They are so nice.
I was so scared. They signed autographs and let people take pictures. When
I gave Justin a candle, he said,"Ahh, is that for me? Thank you. That
is so sweet." Those guys are so normal it is shocking. Well, that
was my best brush of greatness. I had just seen Reba McEntire in concert, and
I realized I had no money to get home. I called a friend of mine and left
a message for her to come and get me. While I was waiting, I was standing
by a bar, and I noticed that Reba's band members were all around. I went
member to member and got their autographs. As I was getting ready to leave,
Linda Davis walked over to where I was standing. She was SO nice. Just
as beautiful in person as she is on television. We talked for awhile. We
were having a real good time, and she actually invited me back to the show
the following night. Unfortunately I had to work the next night, and I
told her so. She smiled and said "Well, that's too bad. But I'm glad
that we had a chance to have time together now sweetie." I'll never
forget it. CELEBRITY:
LeVar Burton I met LeVar Burton when he was doing a book tour for his book "Aftermath." After waiting in a tremendously long line, it was finally my turn to have my book signed. I had seen LeVar talking very nicely with everyone before me, but just as I walked up to him one of his assistants began to talk to him, and he signed my book without even glancing up at me. I was quite distraught, but my dad suggested we go through the line again, which was by now much shorter and moving rather quickly. I agreed, and after some comforting we got back in line. I had brought along an index card for a friend who wanted LeVar's autograph, and decided this would be my excuse for being in the line again. When I got up to LeVar's table -- and I was, in fact, the very last person in line -- he signed the card, and then my dad convinced me to mention what had happened earlier. LeVar was quite apologetic, and very nice about everything. He even gave me a hug to make up for it, and posed for a photo as well. He is such a versatile actor, and I was delighted to find he's a wonderful person as well. - Meredith Peruzzi, VA For one year, some years ago, I was singer on a cruise ship out of Miami to the Bahamas. While in Nassau, I often went to the Paradise Island casino. Although celebrites regularly came there to perform in the big show room or in one of the lounges, none impressed me as much as the twosome who came one Saturday night just to do a little gambling and catch a show in the showroom: Sammy Davis Jr. and Sidney Potier. In the casino I was introduced to Mr. Potier by a mutual friend. Sammy was walking by himself at one point from one gaming table to another, and I was sitting alone at a closed roulette table. I said, "Hey, Sammy." He looked, turned and stopped. "Do I know you?" he asked. "No," I said; "I'm just a fan." "Don't say 'just,'" he laughed and "gave me five." Later he and Sidney went in and caught the show--Jack Jones--at a front table, of course. - V.G., Wash., DC We went to Hamilton Camp's house for Thanksgiving dinner one year and Teri Garr was there. I was about 17 and she sat with me for about half an hour talking to me about whatever. She was so nice and polite talking to this "kid". This was right after Close Encounters of the Third Kind and she was very well known. I was pretty impressed. - Anonymous I was walking down Melrose in Los Angeles in the early 1980s wearing those funky little wrestler's boots, when a wild-looking woman leaped out of a limo and called after me "I like your boots!" My friend poked me in the ribs and said "That's Tina Turner!" I turned around and shouted "Thanks, Tina!" - Anonymous CELEBRITY: Tabitha from "Bewitched" One of the twins who played Tabitha on Bewitched was handing out leis at our High School Beachcombers Ball. None of us saw our dates all night, they were back at the door getting "lei-ed" again and again! - Anonymous Celebrities: Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum A few years ago I was working for a radio station in New York and I worked in promotions. I was able to attend all of the radio sponsored events and concerts. Through this job I met lots of musicians, known and unknown. The worst, though, was Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum. At the end of a Soul Asylem concert there was autograph session that I was helping to coordinate for the radio station. I was herding "lucky" fans upstairs to meet the band, and kept the band busy signing for about 15 minutes, except for Dave. He was so drunk or out-of-it he could hardly sit in his chair. When a fan could get him to raise his head off of the table to sign something, Dave would slur something incoherently and then rather than sign anything resembling his name, he scrawled a huge "X" across thier cds, t-shirts or scraps of paper, and then laugh when they looked down at their autograph. - Rosemary Deville - Glen Allen, VA Celebrities: Mark Wahlberg, Julian Lennon I ran into Mark Wahlberg (aka marky mark) recently
at the Skybar. He was ok but Julian Lennon was a lot friendlier. Anyone
interested in celeb watching should check out the Skybar at the Mondrian
Hotel in LA. It is often dripping with celebs. But its not always easy
getting in. I've met quite a number of celebrities. Both Bill Cosby and Treat Williams did filming in my home town. Treat was very nice, and hung out with us (well, we did buy him a hamburger) but Cosby, who was filming in a public park, sneered at me when I asked for a smile, and refused to sign any autographs, even to the little kids whose park he had closed. While visiting California, I found an agency which sold maps of the daily filming in LA. I met, or had 'close' encounters with Tom Hanks while filming Turner and Hooch, Michael Jackson doing a Pepsi Commercial, Madonna while filming Who's That Girl (her body guards didn't like my snapping pictures!) and Pat Morita filming an episode of his short-lived show, Ohara. I've also had a nice chat with Regis Philbin on the set of his morning show. The USA network had a show running mid-day called USA Live which 'came from' a luncheonette, we ate donuts and met various celebrities like Maureen McGovern (who shreiked when she saw her OLD nose on a record album I brough) and Roger Ebert. I've also had a hello with Robin Williams who lived down the block from the NYC school where I taught, Carole King, who filmed a short piece for Fox-TV there, and most recently Harry Connick Jr. visited our school. Finally, I got to meet Leonard Nimoy, backstage at a show he was doing. We traded 'Vulcan' greetings, it was wonderful. And, I ran into Alan 'Mr. Candid Camera' Funt in New York City, I asked if he was doing anything sneaky and he said, "not unless you consider waiting for a cab to be sneaky"!!! - Ira Goldwyn - West Haven, CT CELEBRITIES: Various Hello my name is R.W. Martin (actor/comedian/screenwriter -- or aspiring to be). In my life I have talked on the phone with celebrities, met them, worked with them and received autographs from them. Some were nice, the others had a chip on their shoulder. Here are some of the most memorable: 1983 East Corinth/Tompson Vermont: Robin Williams I met Robin Williams when I was just 18 it was a year after his Mork & Mindy days. He was filming a movie called "The Survivors" with Walter Matthau and Jerry Reed. He was truly awesome and funny in person. He signed a record album (Reality: What a Concept) and a couple posters. I said "someday I'm gonna be an actor too, and I'll be in Hollywood". He replied, "when you get to California look me up." In 1994 I took a bus to California, but never hooked up with him. 1987 Townsend/Windsor Vermont Chevy Chase I met Chevy Chase in the lobby of the Windsor ski resort hotel. After tracking him down and impersonating a friend of Jim Van Wyke. He joked with my friend and I, then signed an autograph on yellow lined paper. I did my impersonation of him in "Fletch". Then I said someday I'm gonna be a comedian but I could never be as funny as you. He replied, "you already are you just don't know it yet." CLICK HERE TO READ MORE OF R.W. MARTIN's CELEBRITY ENCOUNTERS CELEBRITY: Ellen Degeneres and Anne Heche I was on my way back to NY from Melbourne, Australia.
I got off in L.A. to transfer to a flight back to NY now I had just spent
12 hours on the previous flight and pretty much out of it until I was walking
up the ramp to my flight when Ellen Degeneres's Press Agent bumped right
into me from behind nearly knocking me down. I excused her because she
had a lot of bags with her. That's when Ellen came up to me with Anne Heche
and asked me if I was alright. I was in shock I have always thought that
she was funny and I always liked her as an actress. I'm proud to say that
although we didn't meet under the best of circumstances it worked out pretty
well. Unfortunately I didn't have a pen or paper on me to get an autograph
or a camera, but I least I have the memory! In the spring of 1980 I was attending a company
picnic with my brother at Catarack State Park in Indiana. We were all playing
beach football when it began to rain. I noticed a man standing off alone
near the edge of the beach where our football had just landed. I went to
retrieve the ball and got a close look at the gentleman who was standing
watching the rain fall on the water. It was Martin Sheen. He was wearing
some shorts from Ohio State and was shirtless as it was a beach and warm
weather. I inquired of him regarding his identity and he confirmed my question.
He said, "Yes I am Martin Sheen and you're getting wet!" He went
on to say that anyone who would stand in the rain with him deserved a picture
so he took a picture with us then of us! He said he was driving to Dayton,
Ohio to see his parents and showed us his white Rolls Royce. I asked him
about how it was working with Marlin Brando and he shared his heart attack
experience during filming Apocolypse. A great experience. CELEBRITY: The Thompson Twins I was with my cousin in an LA dance club called The Odyssey and the Thompson Twins asked us to go "home" with them. All three of them. I wasn't even tempted. - Anonymous CELEBRITY: Jim Belushi and Arnold Schwarzenegger I am a fifteen year old girl and I live in a small Illinois town. I am very interested in celebrities, yet where I live you don't see very many celebrities around. Last summer, my family and I went to Los Angeles. On the trip to Los Angeles I just had to meet a celebrity , and that I did. The first day that we got to LA , we decided to go to Santa Monica and visit the pier. When we got to the pier we saw that there was some sort of filming taking place so we went down to the beach to check it out. When we went down there we asked around to see what was going on and no one knew. So we went over towards the make-up trailers and we noticed there was a man sitting on the steps. My father all of a sudden yelled, "It's Jim Belushi!" Sure enough it was, and not two minutes after my father spotted him, he got up and he started walking in our direction on his way to the set. When he walked by I said hello to him. He turned around and he said hi back. We all started talking and he agreed to a picture and an autograph inscribed to me. As a matter of fact, when my dad was going to take the picture, Mr. Belushi put his arm around me. After my dad took the picture, he turned, looked at me and said, "Are you shaking?" It was hilarious. After meeting Mr. Belushi we were about ready for lunch so we headed to Beverly Hills. We went to Planet Hollywood. We were enjoying our meals and just chillin' out, still shocked about Jim Belushi, and who walks in? None other than the great Arnold Schwarzenegger. We were just speechless. To make it even better, he sat at the table right next to ours. When he was done with his meal, I approached him and asked him for a picture and/or an autograph. He was happy to supply both. He signed a Planet Hollywood T-Shirt and even said, "Of course he'd sign it, after all it was a Planet Hollywood T-Shirt". He also took a great picture with me. I had no more celebrity sightings on my trip to LA, but I consider myself totally lucky for the ones I received! - Nicole R., Murphysboro, Illinois I was at a car show in Burbank, CA last year showing one of my Italian cars when Jay Leno drove up in one of his cars. People chased after him until he stopped to take their photos. I just watched and after a while I walked over and looked at his car... WOW! I mentioned to him if he had a chance to stop by my Abarth that I had sometime to give him. He said "ok" and a few minutes later he was making a fast pace checking out all the cars and saw me. I said hi and told him my name and we talked about my car for about 5 minutess. Now I'm not gay or anything, but he had the most pretty eyes I have ever seen. A blue that there is no name for. Anyway, he was very nice and I gave him a set
of personalized California licence plates off one of my other cars I put
into storage. He was very thankful and I asked if I could take his picture
with car and he said "yea-sure sure". I felt bad after because
other guys started asking . I should never had put him in that spot, but
he was friendly and just kept smiling. Why can't other celebrities act
that way? Oh, if you see California licence plate #VRYKOOL it's him. Thanks
Jay for being a regular dude! I have had numerous celebrity encounters, but this is my best story of them all. My husband and I were staying at a hotel in Maryland in which a Star Trek convention was taking place. We walked out of our room one morning on our way to meet a friend who lived in Maryland and a woman standing in a blue nightgown in the room next door to us shouted, "excuse me miss, would you mind getting me some ice". I didn't realize who I was talking to. At that point my New York attitude was in full gear. I was about to turn around and say, do I look like a hotel employee to you lady? Well, when I turned around, to my astonishment, Nichelle Nichols was standing there. She played the part of Lt. Uhura on Star Trek the original series and in the movies. I happily filled her bucket with ice and later that day she autographed a picture for me that says, "thanx for ice". I also had the opportunity to hear her speak. She's an amazing lady with such a wonderful soul. She was a lovely individual and I will never forget my encounter with her. - Anonymous: Bronx, NY CELEBRITY: Cast of Northern Exposure I live in Redmond, Washington, where indoor shooting for TV's "Northern Exposure" was conducted. In addition to seeing the company do exterior filming in the town of Roslyn, Washington, I was also able to visit the Redmond studio a couple of times to watch them at work. An assistant director arranged my first visit, and my husband (who did computer consulting for the production company) arranged the second. We saw and/or met Rob Morrow (Joel), Janine Turner (Maggie), Barry Corbin (Maurice), John Cullum (Holling), John Corbett (Chris), Darren Burrows (Ed), Cynthia Geary (Shelly), Peg Phillips (Ruth-Ann), and Paul Provenza (Phil Capra), as well as many of the regular minor-role actors, production crew, and extras who worked on the show. Rob Morrow was a little standoffish with visitors and fans, but everyone else we met was unassuming and very friendly. - Marilyn: Redmond, WA CELEBRITY: The Grateful Dead (Bob Weir) When the Grateful Dead visited Columbus, Ohio in the summer of 1993, I went downtown to the hotel I knew they stayed in the previous year hoping to meet someone from the band. At this point I'd been seeing the Dead in concert for 8 years. I ended up shooting pool in the lounge with the crew of the Dead's charter plane. Bob Weir walked in and invited us up the the bar in the hotel's restaurant, where he and Vince Welnick, the band's keyboard player were hanging out. After a drink, the bar made last call. Bobby invited everyone up to the presidential suite where he ordered a case of beer from room service. We conversed at length about cycling and environmental issues, topics we were both familiar with. When he found out that I was in school for Environmental Communications at Ohio State, he said, "Hold on, I want to get your name and number and give you mine". It turned out he was working on an environmental 800 number and thought I could be of some assistance! He gave me his home number and told me to call him after summer tour ended. I did reach him at home and met up with him a few months later in Cleveland, but nothing ever materialized. I did have him autograph an 8x10 photo of him that a friend had taken, and to this day I still have his number in my address book! - Jeffrey, Pittsburgh - PA I am a waiter in a well known restaurant in LA and therefore deal with a lot of celebrities. Most of them are pretty decent and very good tippers. But Whitney Houston isn't one of them. I cringe whenever she comes into the restaurant. She is usually rude and demanding and always a really bad tipper. She once gave me $8 on a $200 tab. When she has come in with Bobby (Brown) he picks up the tab and is much more generous, not to mention easier to deal with. - Anonymous, Los Angeles I spend every summer in Stone Harbor on the Jersey Shore. On Labor Day in 1997, Oprah Winfrey was looking at a house to buy there. When I heard this, I went out on a little Oprah search. Well, I definitely saw her! She and a friend were jogging down the street. She had no makeup on and was in a little jogging suit. I wasn't sure if it was her until I heard her voice. Trying to be polite, I said, "Good Morning Mrs. Winfrey!" She said, "Good Morning!" and kept on truckin'! - Bethany, Delaware
I went up to Brad Pitt in a L.A. restaurant. He totally ignored me and never even looked in my direction. Even the guy with him was surprised. What a jerk! - Anonymous
CELEBRITY: Cyndi Lauper Anyways, as we went backstage we were asked if we wanted anything to drink, but we were too nervous. Cyndi finally came after about 10 minutes. She was surprised that some of her family was there and then she came to say hi to us. The first thing she said to us both was 'congratulations'. She hugged and kissed both of us. She had a lot of family there which I thought was nice. Roberto gave her a painting of her wearing a gold helmet which she really liked. We took 2 pictures and she signed my True Colors t-shirt all the way back from 1986! I had to stretch it out so she could write on it. Good thing I brought a marker with me! She then used it again to sign something else for someone else! I will treasure that pen forever! And then she was holding her stomache saying that she had to go to NYC to go to her doctors tomorrow because last time, they forgot to take a pic of the sonogram. But she told her family that too, so we know it just wasn't some story! And then I was telling her that the pains she was having now were nothing and to JUST WAIT! She didn't look too happy, but at least it was conversation! Roberto is now saying that I scared her!!! - Kathryn, MA CELEBRITY: Harrison Ford During the making of 'The Devil's Own', while filming the scene where Harrison Ford and Ruben Blades chase after the guy who stole the rubbers, some guy with a fake press pass was trying to get on the set too. Harrison cussed this guy out in front of everybody and the cops took the guy away. The director came down, assuming that we (the spectators) had done something. Mr. Ford told him about the guy, told him that we were ok; he even apologized for his language to us. I didn't care about his cussing....nobody's perfect. But I respect the fact that he's human just like the rest of us. - M.B., Texas CELEBRITY: June Lockhart I met June Lockhart at the Salt Lake City Airport in June 1977. I was
there to pick my sister up, who was coming to visit. My wife and I were
just walking in the door to the airport when I heard Miss Lockhart being
paged to go to a certain airline counter. I told me wife, "Meet Lisa
at gate 5 -- I'll be back!!" and took off. I had a short talk with
Miss Lockhart and told her that I had enjoyed watching "Lost in Space"
when I was younger. She was very gracious and said that they'd had a lot
of fun doing the show. When I finally got back to the airplane's gate,
my sister had already arrived and both she and my wife were just a little
annoyed with me for taking off like that! I met Miss Lockhart again on
November 22, and while she did not remember meeting me in the airport,
she did remember doing the show in Salt Lake City in 1977 and was quite
amused at how I had abandoned both my wife and my sister to go run off
and meet her! - J.B., Hartly - DE CELEBRITY: Robin Williams I was a sophomore drama major at one of the Claremont Colleges (Scripps) when Robin Williams entered Claremont Men's College in 1969 to study political science. He stayed for only a year, but during that time he took an improvisational theater class at Scripps (I've read interviews in which he credited this class with giving him the acting bug). The class was taught by a Scripps grad and former member of the famed San Francisco improv troupe, The Committee. Rob performed in two stage productions with the Four Colleges Players that year: Dylan Thomas' "Under Milkwood" (as Cap'n Cat) and an original musical version of "Alice in Wonderland" (as-- who else?--the Mad Hatter). I was in his improv class and also in "Milkwood" with him. Believe it or not, I don't remember him being particularly madcap. He actually was quite serious about the actor's art. - M.K., Redmond - Washington
CELEBRITY: Sammy Davis Jr. I was never a big Sammy Davis Jr. fan untill sometime in the late 70s.
Me and a friend were in a uncrowded section at LAX airport looking at schedules.
My friend nudged me and I looked up to see Sammy Davis walking by. Instead
of walking by and ignoring us he gave a cool nod and a wave while continuing
on his way. Silly, but he looked at us, and acknowledged us and in my mind
he's been as cool as they come ever since. - R.P., Seattle - Washington CELEBRITY: Walter Koenig I was fortunate to meet Walter Koenig (Chekov,STAR TREK... Bester, BABYLON
5) at the Conquest '98 convention in Brisbane. He and his wife Judy Levitt
were very nice people. They were only too happy to sign autographs and
say hello to their fans!!! I'll definitely be watching more Star Trek and
Babylon 5 in the future!! - L.T., Queensland - Australia Celebrity: Howard Cosell In high school I was a member of the Baltimore Colts Band. Even though
the team left the band stayed together. In the spring of 1985 Robert Irsay
had the decency to return many Colt's artifacts and such to the City of
Baltimore. City Hall had a big ceremony at which the band played. Before
the ceremony started, my friend Keith and I needed to use the restroom.
As we started to enter City Hall to do so, we literally bumped into Howrd
Cosell. The only reaction I could muster was "Damn, you're Howard
Cosell". Howard didn't miss a beat, he said "Yes I am" in
his trademark voice and continued on. - E.S., Baltimore Celebrity: Bo Derek I met Bo Derek on a movie set. Even had my picture taken with her. Found her to be lifeless and in the picture she looks like a manikin. Nice enough, but completely vacuous. What a surprise? -10 Watcher Celebrity: Boris Yeltsin When the G-7 summit was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in June of 1995 I shook hands with Russian Prime Minister Boris Yeltsin as he greeted a small crowd outside of his hotel. Yeltsin was extremely friendly -- especially to the women in the crowd! He briefly shook my hand and proceeded to cup my former girlfriend's hand and wink (leer?) at her. I was also nearly bowled over by German Chancellor Helmut Kohl (and his security entourage) that same day as they made their way from the waterfront to his limousine. This guy should be playing football. He must be 6'6"!! - S.M., Toronto Celebrity: Keanu Reeves Photo: Click here I met Keanu Reeves and asked him to pose for a photo with me. He complied
but was like a mannequin - completely emotionless. He never smiled or said
anything and after the picture was taken he just walked off. I am no longer
a Keanu Reeves fan. - S.S., New York Celebrity: Chris Farley Photo: Click here I had a few encounters with Chris Farley while he was shooting 'Tommy Boy' in Toronto. He was a real treat along with Dan Ackroyd and most of the rest of the cast. However, David Spade was always a real drip and certainly did not have the sort of decency Chris had. May he rest in peace. - K.S., Toronto
